More than 200 former Illinois football players made it back to campus over the weekend to renew acquaintances with their teammates and other letterwinners. A reception, held Friday evening in the West Great Hall of Memorial Stadium, was the main formal event of the weekend in addition to the spring game, but a number of informal gatherings took place on golf courses and other local establishments.
A number of former players and current staff members were privileged to meet arguably "the best linebacker to play the game," Dick Butkus, who was back at his alma mater. Butkus is one of only two Illinois gridders (the other is Red Grange) to have had his jersey number retired.

The University of Illinois football team has set its 15-day practice schedule for the spring season, kicking off workouts on Tues., March 28 and culminating in the annual Orange and Blue Spring Game on April 22 at 1 p.m.
SPRING NOTES: Four players, quarterback Tim Brasic, defensive end Xavier Fulton, linebacker Sam Porter and defensive tackle Tremayne Walker will miss a portion of spring practices while completing team-issued academic standards. Senior wide receiver Lonnie Hurst has been dismissed from the team due to violation of academic policies.
"The reason our student-athletes are here is to get an education," Illinois head football coach Ron Zook said. "I can't emphasize enough how important it is that each player take care of business in the classroom before they can do it on the field."

Scott Turner has faced a number of challenges in his life. He was recruited by John Mackovic's staff from the Dallas area in the late '80's and played wide receiver, then defensive back for the Orange and Blue. In addition, he was an All-Big Ten sprinter for Coach Gary Wieneke's Illini track & field team.
Turner was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the seventh round of the 1995 NFL Draft and enjoyed a nine-year pro career in the nation's capital, in San Diego, and in Denver.
Little did he know when he was in D.C., that those glimpses he had of the capital would help inspire him to run for public office. Next month Turner will find out if he's headed back to Washington to represent the citizens of the San Diego, Calif., area, in Congress.

Seven Illinois seniors went through a battery of tests at Memorial Stadium and at the Irwin Indoor Football Facility Wednesday at the team's annual Pro Timing Day.
The Orange and Blue was represented by DB James Cooper, FB Jason Davis, WR Kendrick Jones, DT Ryan Matha, DB Morris Virgil. P/K Steve Weatherford and DB Travis Williams.
Scouts spent the early morning viewing videotapes of the player's collegiate performances, while the players opened up the day's festivities by taking the Wonderlic Personnel Test.
Then it was off to the weight room, where the heights and body weights were measured, as well as their vertical jump and the number of times they could bench press 225 pounds.
The actual testing took place in the Irwin Indoor Football Facility. The athletes performed the standing broad jump and the 60-yard dash, in addition to a number of agility drills.
